Creating fashion from your wedding photos

Be warned… The following images are enchantingly sophisticated, incredibly creative and will leave you wanting more. These real wedding photos are like editorials that have jumped from the pages of Vogue magazine ; shots of glamourous Hollywood starlets of times gone by, yet they’re all real Brides.

Grand Master Yervant and Anie, the owners of Yervant International, an award winning boutique studio based in Melbourne, have perfected their Signature style of wedding photography and create images that belong on the walls of a gallery in Melbourne; sensually elegant and glamourous.

Yervant has perfected their ‘fashion meets weddings’ Signature style which has been nurtured over 20 years. A style that brings the Bride to life in editorial, or fashion like imagery.

I am a huge fan of fashion wedding photography and both Yervant and Anie are exceptional at the photographs they create; legacies of Brides who resemble models of beautiful love, not real Brides. They become legends through glossy, misty photographs.

These are real Brides! These are real weddings!

I am deeply inspired by Yervant Photography and wish it upon every Bride to have stunning memories of their wedding day like these. This is wedding photography! Prepare to gasp.

Bryony and Mason met one night at the Crown and Anchor, our favorite pub here in my neighborhood.  Well actually Gator met Mason first.  Gator is one of Bryony’s cute pups.  Name fits.  He lept from her lap and made a mad dash for the door (yes, our pub is dog friendly).  The only barricade to his freedom, or so he thought, but standing in his escape path was Mason who scooped him up returning him to his rightful companion, Bryony.

After that chance meeting brought about by Gator, Mason and Bryony started talking to each other on their ferry ride to work in the French Quarter.  What she didn’t know was he started taking the later ferry so he could spend more time with her.

He’s always been a cook

They are both cooks.  He works for Rick Tramonto and John Folse at R’evolution and she for Susan Spicer at Bayona.  “I don’t think Mason saw me in anything other than baggy chef pants for the first 6 months we knew each other.  Yes it took him that long to make a move.  He’s always been a cook, and I had a major reinvention of myself at the age of 40.  Two years ago I repaired, maintained and delivered racing sailboats in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.” says Bree.  To be closer to her Grandmama inspired her move to New Orleans.  When asked what her favorite thing about New Orleans she replied,  “Just one?  Or a thousand?  Everything.  She’s an adventure every day.  Just go outside.”

They knew almost immediately that “we made sense to each other, when we don’t seem to make much sense to anyone else

we made sense to each other, when we don’t seem to make much sense to anyone else

.  Same vernacular, in music, literature, art and food.  Same tastes, similar pasts.  Kind of weird”.  She says ”there really wasn’t a ‘getting to know you’ phase for us, it was more like catching up with your best friend after being out of touch for a long while.”

We served Louisiana oysters

They choose to do a DIY wedding New Orleans’ style.  Everything was DIY, even the oyster shucking.  We served Louisiana oysters, champagne and the most delicious dark chocolate espresso cake made by my friend Kylie, who had to work that day missing my wedding.  Mason and I wore cameos my mother left me, his in the ascot.  Bryony’s dress was her own creation inspired by the ballerina paintings of Edgar Degas who spent time painting in a wonderful home on Esplanade here in NOLA.  (I’ve shot some weddings at The Degas House.  It is a very cool location for an art inspired wedding).  She laughs a little and tells me she wished she had done a final fitting because she lost weight causing the skirt to keep slipping down from under her corset.

End of the world

They choose their wedding date, December 21, 2012.  The Mayan Calendar’s end of the world…” just in case it really was the end of the world

just in case it really was the end of the world

…or because Mason’s friends always said the world would end before he got married as did he”.  We started shooting on the levee, the elevated protection barrier between our neighborhood and the mighty Mississippi River.  It was 40 degrees outside.   And the wind was blowing sideways.  Let me tell you, we moved fast!  Their ceremony was performed on the Algiers/Canal Street Ferry precisely at 11:11 am.  Ferry Captain in attendence.  They were joined by old and new friends, their neighbors.  Even dogs.  The reception began at a friend’s house and moved to the Pub.

Like to do a boudoir shoot?

I asked Bryony not long after shooting their wedding if she would like to do a boudoir shoot. I could tell she would be seriously, awesomely photogenic

I could tell she would be seriously, awesomely photogenic

.  Little did I know how much!  My favourite MUA, Charlotte Passeur, also a former bride, did the honours of styling Bree to my vision and a fabulous job she did!  Its most important that my gals feel at ease and comfortable during their shoot.  Anxiety not allowed so we girls keep it loose and relaxed.  Bree said “It was like playing dress up with your girlfriends when you were young…but better!”.

I only had an hour and half to spare between booked weddings so we shot their portraits and ceremony.  The best decision I ever made in a bar was gifting their wedding photography.  They allowed me to stretch my creative wings, even trying out some iPhone images.  It takes willing and trusting couples to present images that speak.

Quality over quantity – your wedding photography.

Way back in the mists of time there was this thing called film. It came on rolls, usually with 36 frames per roll and your photographer would turn up with 20 or 25 of these rolls. Or possibly your wedding photographer was really posh and used a medium format camera which had even less capacity. Every time the shutter was fired another frame was committed to film. Every time your wedding photographer pressed that button, it was because they were absolutely sure that everything was right. Each frame mattered!

Digital and cheep cards

Then came digital and then came cheap storage cards. Now it didn’t matter so much financially to the photographer if they shot more than was necessary. After all, the cards can be reused right? It’s a one-off cost and each time a photographer takes a picture it doesn’t cost them actual money right? Well, actually it does, but that’s a discussion for photographers to heat about behind closed doors :D

What this has lead to is that photographers have become engaged in a type of wedding photography arms race. One wedding photographer has offered you all day coverage with 200 images? The next one offers you 1000 images, 3000 images, a million images. I once photographed a wedding where the Bride and Groom had had another ceremony in Greece. Their Greek photographer supplied them with, seriously, 3500 images across 4 DVD’s! In her own words “after the 1st DVD we stopped looking at them”.

Where does it all end?

On a high!

AliceMag-I1AK-Photography-05

So how does this effect you?

After all surely, all things else being equal, having more must mean having better right? Well think about it like this – if you go to an all you can eat buffet, you don’t expect Michelin quality food. Everything is O.K, but it’s not amazing food that you dream about for weeks after. It’s just mass produced food, not lovingly crafted dishes that tantalise and caress your tastebuds.

Using the number of images a photographer will supply you shouldn’t even be a consideration when you’re looking to hire a photographer. I could, in theory, present you with about 6000 images. But do you really want 6000 machine gunned (a term photographers use when someone shoots by simply holding down the shutter and continuously shoots 15 or 20 frames every few seconds) images that become the photographic equivalent of an all you can eat buffet after a Saturday lunchtime? Does that make my photography inherently better than the guy who says you’ll realistically have around 150 images? No, of course not. If anything, the opposite is true.

So if the number of images isn’t a quantifier, what is?

That’s simple – the photographers work. Choose the person whose entire body of work moves you. Whose work makes you want to have that wedding you see in their images. The work that makes your mum cry when you check out the portfolio. The wedding photographs that take your breath away. The photographer who makes you feel comfortable and secure. The album that just oozes quality. The photographs that have meaning and beauty. The photographs that speak to you. The photographs that you love.

Don’t go for the buffet unless you don’t care!

Some three years ago Frances and Christ started planning a traditional wedding in a beautiful stately home – Knowsley Hall, home of the Earl of Derby and his family – and, not only fitting for the venue they had chosen, but also in the best tradition of weddings this celebration really was all about family. The wedding was booked for September 2012, and from the very first meeting Fran and Chris knew exactly what they wanted for their stationery, and it all had to start with the seating plan!

Fran and Chris had a vision – a family tree consisting of intertwining, organic forms each of which framed a table named after a branch of their newly combined families. In order to design all the other stationery items, we had to get this right. Our first few attempts were created on the computer, nice clean lines resulting in a clean, crisp finish – gorgeous, but rejected – not organic enough! In the end we went right back to basics and our talented designer picked up her sketch book and inks and hand drew each frame, all them different and each with charming details, little leaves, twigs and sprigs and sprays of grass. Once completed the design was de-constructed to allow us to pick out elements to use on each separate item within the stationery suite.

First came a save the date card, printed on soft ivory pearlised board in the wedding palette of ivory, lilac and plum with gold accents. The invitation was a take on our luxe card style with a small packet of cards secured to the inside, giving guests all the details they needed. The pretty, delicate colour scheme was perfect for the venue – lots of gilded cornices and frames, with cherubs on the ceiling of the main main hall and a library dedicated to ‘The Menagerie at Knowsley’. The use of colour brought everything together and thoughtful little details such as the individual welcome packs for each member of the wedding party really show how much care has gone into preparing this family affair. Keeping it in the family, Fran’s mum calligraphed the individual menus for each guest. And as a fabulous finishing touch, the wedding cake was painted in liquid gold icing using elements of the organic design.

Producing the seating plan was a labour of love. Who knew that to get a piece of heavy weight mountboard printed could be so complicated? We explored many different ways of producing a large format full colour print but we had a budget to work to and in the end, we found the solution. We kind of wish we could share that secret with you…..but we can’t ;) Doesn’t it look great though? Each aperture is carefully cut around the intricate pattern, leaving Fran and Chris with a genuine keepsake which they planned to hang at home as a reminder of their amazing day. PS The happy couple look pretty amazing too don’t they?!

Vintage styling has for some time been hugely popular for weddings. So what were the wedding fashions and influences from three of the key decades and how you can draw some top ideas for your own wedding?

1920’s – It’s a family affair

Weddings were a family affair organised, catered and decorated by family and friends.

Wedding dresses started the decade simple, plain and adaptable, often satin so that they could be dyed and re-used again.  That changed during the decade with hemlines gradually shortening and by 1926 these had crept up to knee length.

A generation that had come of age during the war now wanted to let their hair down.  A new breed of women, released from wearing a corset, now danced in jazz clubs, drank and smoked.  Silhouettes were flat chested, straight up and down.

Veils were worn low on the forehead with beaded head dresses which for many brides, added much needed glamour, wreath style head pieces were popular and suitable for all face features and shapes for Ladies Wedding Fashion.

The bar shoe, which had been worn for many years was now visible under the shorter dresses meaning more attention was paid to shoes also looking fabulous.

The fabrics used were silk and embroidered chiffon accentuated by the flower of choice, which remained the lily.

Strings of pearls and elbow length gloves were the must have accessories.

Your Wedding Fashion Take-aways:

  • Wreath style head dresses
  • Involve family and friends in the organising and dressing of the venue for a true vintage feel
  • Beading and Pearls accessorised with long gloves
  • Shorter dress so that you can opt for heavily detailed shoes

1930’s – Picture perfect

Family and friends were still heavily involved with the wedding but this decade started to see the introduction of stores offering wedding services.  1934 saw a change to the times that couples could wed, an extension from 3pm to 6pm meant that celebrations could continue on to the evening reception.

Following the 1929 Wall Street crash and ensuing problems, people were depression weary and audiences flocked to the cinema to escape the reality of life.  The movies provided a window into a glamorous alternative world, and if there was one day when every girl could be a star it was her wedding day.

Hair styles moved from the chin to the shoulder in length, and soft waves were incorporated.  Photography started to bring society weddings to life and brides wanted to emulate them.

A bias cut, was heavily used and the halter neck dress first appeared. Bolero jackets and capes gave an impression of wide shoulders which further emphasised slim hips.

Rhinestones and feathers gave added sparkle to satin dresses emphasised with costume jewellery and wedding fashion. Dresses were worn over long, with a small train or with fabric flowing onto the floor.

During the second half of the decade pastel colours were an alternative to white wedding dresses in

1937 the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson married, she wore a pale blue crepe satin two piece dress.  The cinched in waist and fabric draped over the chest was a style that captured the imagination of many brides.  The dress was quickly copied and appeared in many “ready to wear” collections in clothes stores.

Your Wedding Fashion Take-aways:

  • Modernist designs and Art Deco – incorporate these into your stationery.
  • Gorgeous waves in shoulder length hair to provide movie-star glamour.
  • Halter necks and over long slim silhouetted satin dresses, fabulous for weddings as they provide such a luxurious look.
  • Costume jewellery and rhinestones.

1950’s – Famously fabulous

Women had proved their independence and capabilities during World War II but had to give up work to make way for returning soldiers.  Stores now offered specific wedding fashion services and brides wanted wedding packages to ensure their day was special.  Grand formal ceremonies became the thing to do and every girl felt it her right to have a big wedding.

Fuller skirts became popular with nipped in waists combined with short (wrist length) gloves.  In 1953 Jackie Bouvier married John F Kennedy in an ivory silk taffeta gown which purportedly had a 24 inch waist accessorised with small white gloves.  The ever stunning Audrey Hepburn married actor Mel Ferrer in an equally glorious gown.

Sweet heart necklines and puffed sleeves became popular or high collared gowns, as worn by Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco. The antique lace upper bodice embellished with pearls, sat over a silk taffeta gown made from some 25 yards of material.

Your Wedding Fashion Take-aways:

  • Little white gloves
  • Full veil, flowing down at the back
  • Full skirt (tea length or to the floor)
  • Understated flowers with lots of small white blooms

Your Wedding Fashion Era

Once you have picked the era that inspires you, bring it to life across all aspects of your wedding fashion in as large or small a scale as you wish.

It’s been around since 1848 when Wagner composed it for the opera Lohengrin. Today it’s taking on new life. This ‘new’ Bridal March is beautifully sculpted with a wonderfully rich melody and will leave your guests in tears of utter, belated joy! And that’s before you’ve said your vows!

With a brilliantly composed twist, this contemporary version of the Bridal March is about to bring wedding classics back to life. There are no cliche’s here, just utter musical genius!

The age old classic has had a facelift and it’s beautiful.

OK girls! Are you after a unique wedding dress? Something different but you still want to be head to toe in couture! Let’s face it, we all feel that much more beautiful when we don couture and now you can at a spectacular price… because the stunning new Kaviar Gauche bridal collection collaboration from Zalando is now available online at their one stop brilliant fashion shop.

I am loving the Bridesmaids dresses with their floaty, sumptuous goddess appeal.

After their first successful collaboration, Zalando and Kaviar Gauche are delighted to announce a new collection of stunning ready-to-wear occasion wear, including two beautiful wedding gowns from renowned Berlin based designers Johanna Kühl und Alexandra Fischer-Roehler.

Inspired by Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love, beauty and pleasure, this exquisite 20 piece collection features a range of floaty dresses, blouses, trousers and skirts and accessories based around the sacred myrtle motif – a plant that Aphrodite used to disguise her nudity and one that is still revered by Greek brides today who wear it on their wedding day to strengthen their marriage.

These two stunning silk wedding gowns bring the classic Bride a taste of contemporary fashion with a laser-cut myrtle motif lace bandeau.

…Continuing Kaviar Gauche’s love of contrast, there’s also a knee length wedding dress with myrtle details in faux leather lace and a delicate belt for more modern-Millies. Bridesmaid dresses feature details such as leather and chains in pastel yellow and mint green.

Prices start around £590 for a wedding dress. The entire collection is available exclusively online at Zalando.co.uk.
