Wedding Photo Shoot: Gothic and beautiful

From Charlotte of Wilden Bride:

“We’ve always been drawn to gothic styling, there’s something quite seductive about it, which seems so appropriate on the day you will marry your love.

We also wanted to create some realistic inspiration, that is achievable for Wedding couples to create, without turning your wedding into a fancy dress party.

My biggest piece of advice to couples wanting to recreate the Gothic look is to choose subtle details to transform your look, rather than crowding with too many themed details.

Most of the pieces used within the shoot are not necessarily ‘Gothic Themed Products’, but by adding styled accessories and a small twist to traditional pieces, you can transform the look of your wedding…”

“…I just love surprise details – things that you notice only when you see things up close. It brings a level of curiosity to the day and keeps your guests interested as they discover new details all day long!

Wilden Bride designer and stylist, Charlotte, created and styled accessories to suit the theme from her box of magic tricks, using layers of deep red and pink chiffons and satins to make rose corsages, headbands and chokers from eclectic mixes of vintage lace and beads, broken jewellery and vintage findings. Charlotte’s style is very much to add layer upon layer of desirable items until the right depth is found.

Emma from BeauButtons created one of her wonderful Button Bouquets to which she added dismantled watch faces and cogs, dice and buttons in the shapes of top hats.

Gwenda from The Vintage Floral Design Co. chose flowers which combined dark luxurious  reds and burgundies, and really interesting shapes, all tied up with black lace and ribbons. The black Cala Lillies are mesmerising with their unusual shapes and texture. Gwenda also created a floral wand as an alternative to a bouquet, containing a single red rose – the ultimate symbol of true love.

Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from non-wedding sources, and look to high fashion instead. Hair design by Hayley of Brides and Beauty is inspired by Alexander McQueen, creating deep dark shapes and shadows. For the first look, Hayley created an asymmetric parting, and sculpted two curled horns, which add interest from every angle. This hairstyle was accessorised with a black headband by Wilden Bride.

We then changed the look, placing a floral crown by VFDC as though hanging from one horn.”

“…For the second look, the style is more rounded and playful, with a quiff at the front to add height and a more adult feel. Silk roses by Wilden Bride were pinned en masse to support to the style.

The great thing about these hairstyles is that they are so easily adaptable for other themes and genres. With just a little styling and accessorising they are easily transformed.

Joyce of Brides and Beauty created the gothic make-up looks. Gothic make-up is a very strong look, and so Joyce has demonstrated two versions. The first look is very dark, smokey eyes, lots of liner and and dark lip, fading from dark liner to silvery flesh.

The second look is reminiscent of a wide-eyed Tim Burton Heroine, wide-eyed and long-lashed, with a bright red shiny lip.

Ciara from Dita Florita supplied two of the brides outfits from her online collection of vintage dresses. Ciara also provides a Dream Dress Search service, and was able to source two dresses based on her vision of what she felt embodied the theme.

Ciara chose a short dress with a lace overlay and had a sharp scalloped edge, and also a gorgeous black gown, which was softened by soft tulle sleeves, ruffles at the neckline and tulles skirts. The dresses from Ciara’s permanent collection, we styled into the theme by adding a black corset from Wilden Bride, with a tangle of black silk orchids, and large black silk poppy growing organically on the neckline.

For the dessert table Lau from French Made used some more tradition victorian emblems, such as calligraphic script, and damask stencils to decorate cookie icing, deep red and burgundy piped rose cupcakes, and black heart motifs with draped sugar beads on her 3-tier cake, complete with feather and fresh flower topper. We got creative with other themes for the dessert table, including top hats as cake stands to add different levels to the table, which is important for creating a sense of luxury in your display. Lau also took the sinister theme of death and victorian apothecary, drizzling meringues with blood, wrapping coffin shaped favour boxes in decorated papers, sweeties in vintage jars and medicine bottles and serving absinthe from test tubes.

The table was finished with Little Jems intricately made wedding stationary, with an enchanting modern yet quirky font, set on a background of gothic poetry for a pretty play on words, creating a juxtaposition of gothic style with a modern feel.

Each label was tied with a burgundy ribbon, threaded with skull shaped beads.

The Finer Details made a wooden sign to celebrate the wedding couple, you could alter your names to something a little quirky to fit your theme if you feel like getting really creative.

The models poses and camera angles were also essential to our theme. Kat, the photographer really enjoys when her Wedding clients get creative, it’s all an experiment and sometimes it’s worth taking just 5 minutes to try to get a really great creative photo that nobody else will have! Kat is great at seeing the opportunity for a great picture and spends a section of her time exploring the venue to figure out some great spots for your pictures.”
