Unique wedding dresses: out is white and in is attitude

Unique wedding dresses: out is white and in is attitude

There’s a change in the air.  Something somewhere is starting to emerge.  It’s different, it’s creative and it’s captivating.  Can you feel it?

The wedding dress as we know it is making a stand!

No longer are we just seeing white, ivory or gentle shades of either in wedding dress designs today. No siree!  The humble wedding dress has and is getting a huge make over and designers everywhere are incorporating bold statements with reds (like Vera Wangs 2013 collection) and blacks (like Vera Wangs 2012 collection).  Even the traditional fairytale style wedding dress is getting sexier with the use of corsetry and unique designers are popping up all over the world designing unique wedding dresses.  Unusual styles incorporating a myriad of colours and bold patterns are creating the ‘new’ contemporary wedding dress.  And today’s design duo, Mother and Daughter team from KMK Designs are creating stunning designs from a fairytale dress with attitude, to more gothic inspired creations.

KMK Designs is mother daughter collaboration: Daughter Kaitlyn McClain and Mother Sheridyn McClain.

Unique Wedding Dresses | A Colourful Splash

Unique Wedding Dresses | A Colourful Splash

Yay!  It’s getting warmer and the sun is peeking out from behind those long, dark wintery clouds and I’m sooooo looking forward to Spring.  Flowers, sunshine, happiness and WEDDINGS!!!!

I don’t know about you, but I love nothing better than sitting in my garden, cuppa tea in hand, on my swing chair and watching the day lazily drift by (err hmm – I’m dreaming again aren’t I?).  There is something magical about the way life comes around again in Spring, when the young daffodils and crocuses come out and the blossom on the trees that gently open, peeking out as if to say “peek-a-boo” as the pretty up the garden up.  And with Spring comes Spring weddings, warmer weddings and bright, happy colours.

And today it’s the gorgeous colours of unique wedding dresses that I wanted to show you.   It’s not all about the ivory /white wedding dress anymore and more about a statement that you the Bride wants to make with your fashion statement that is your wedding dress and the more brave Brides become, the more amazing the wedding dress.

So I’ve put together a few of the unique wedding dresses that have been on Alice in Weddingland that are just sumptuous, different, creative and of course unique.

The alternative wedding dress: Wild and colourful couture by Wai Ching – Part Two

The alternative wedding dress: Wild and colourful couture by Wai Ching – Part Two

I‘ve been looking forward to posting Part Two of Chrissy Wai-Chings stunning alternative colourful wedding dress collection.  I’m still fantasising about wearing the Zoltova Dress for my 10th Wedding Anniversary shoot in August but these next few dresses are just as stunning as the Zoltova (almost).

I asked Chrissy what her main inspiration for her wedding dresses were and I was so overwhelmed by her response that I am really pleased to share it with you…

I’m deeply influenced by nature and especially botanicals. There’s so much unique repetition and beauty in the natural world. The way my clothing is made is greatly influenced by the philosophies of traditional Chinese art. Things are done in the most meticulous and meditative way, not the easy way.

The logo uses a Chinese seal I created, and many of the strokes sewn into the clothing are based on
Chinese ink wash strokes. The construction process is also following the Bauhaus methodology.  Creating and designing means doing, with the designer completing all steps from the raw textile to the finished product.

Within the clothing, I use sewing techniques taught to me by my Puerto Rican grandmother which were passed on to her by generations of Latinas. I also use techniques of Mola quilting, which is a South American technique of reverse appliqué. My designs are also influenced by European and Native American styles. Chrissy.

The alternative wedding dress: Wild and colourful couture by Wai Ching

The alternative wedding dress: Wild and colourful couture by Wai Ching

There are only so many times you can write the words ‘stunning’, ‘extraordinary’ and ‘visionary’ when you’re describing an alternative wedding dress, no matter how stunning or extraordinary the wedding dress is.  But then there are times like now, when those words just fit like the petals on a rose.  Sometimes no matter how many times you’ve written the words, you have to write them again because the wedding dress you’re writing about is so flippin stunning, extraordinary and visionary; as is the alternative wedding dresses from Wai-Ching!!!

Back in December 2011 I started my exciting new feature on Alice In Weddingland called Down The Lens and featured one of my favourite discoveries of last year, photographer Suzanna Fogarty.  Hidden amongst the many stunning {that word again} wedding photographs she sent me was a little gem.  Like a diamond amongst stone it stung me like a bee.  There before me we was a photo of an alternative wedding dress that simply took my breath away.

The alternative wedding dress was by an extraordinary {told you}, talented designer by the name of Chrissy Wai-Ching who debuted her “wild but wearable’ line of wedding dresses in 2003 and who has since been creating breathtaking alternative wedding dresses.

The little diamond in the rough that I spotted amongst Suzanne’s photographs was the Zolotova Dress.  Like a Flamingo against a sunlit sky this dress bursts with colour.  With global influences flooding her dress designs her fiercely unique clothing is sweeping the States by storm.  And I hope, I pray someone over here in the UK starts stocking her wedding dresses.  If only for me to go and try one on icon smile The alternative wedding dress: Wild and colourful couture by Wai Ching Wedding Blog
